A heavy goods vehicle fire on the M25 has led to closures

A serious lorry fire has caused significant closures on the M25 and M26 motorways, leaving drivers facing long delays and miles of queues this morning. The fire occurred late on Sunday night near Junction 5 for Sevenoaks and Junction 6 for Godstone, affecting the clockwise lanes of the M25.

National Highways South East confirmed that the clockwise carriageway of the M25 remains closed for recovery operations and is not expected to reopen before midday. The incident also led to the closure of the M26 westbound between Junction 2A near Wrotham Heath and the M25/A21 junction. Diversions are in place for affected drivers.

Emergency services responded promptly, with Surrey Fire and Rescue dispatching six fire engines and other specialized equipment to tackle the blaze. Although much of the fire has been extinguished, crews remain on site to monitor and dampen any hot spots.

The anti-clockwise lanes of the M25 have reopened, although lanes 3 and 4 remain closed near Junction 6. Motorists are still being urged to avoid the area, as heavy congestion persists on diversion routes, including the A21, A25, and A22.

National Highways has warned that specialist recovery teams will be required to clear the wreckage and that the road surface may need resurfacing before the route can fully reopen.
